Picture this: Two podcast hosts meet at a conference, discover they share a passion for technology, and decide to dive deep into the impact of AI in business, and our world. That's exactly what happened when Matt Levine, host of The Anycast, sat down with me after we bumped into each other at Podcast Movement.
The conversation that followed wasn't just another AI hype session—it was a candid reality check about where we stand in this technological revolution, the real concerns business leaders face, and what the future truly holds for AI adoption.
Meet Matt Levine and The Anycast
Matt Levine is the kind of host who cuts through the noise. As the creator of The Anycast, he's built a platform that celebrates the tech disruptors, digital pioneers, and unconventional thinkers who are reshaping our future. The Anycast showcases those who perceive and reimagine the world through a unique lens, breaking boundaries and pushing the limits of what's possible.
While the podcast isn't exclusively focused on AI, our conversation naturally gravitated toward this transformative technology that's impacting virtually every industry. Matt's approach combines technical knowledge with practical business applications, making complex technology concepts accessible to decision-makers from all backgrounds.

The AI Hype Cycle vs. Reality
Matt: "I came out of that event specifically feeling like everybody was bent out of shape around AI. Is it honest? Is it ethical? To me, these aren't in the top 10 list of concerns I would have with AI today, necessarily. But people were very sketched out…"
Mike: "I saw a lot of that. I also saw a lot of people just put off by the fact that AI is in everything these days, this AI-ification of every tool, every business that you look at online. When you really get into it, it's like, are you really using AI? Is this just an automation that two years ago you would have said, 'this is an automation, an algorithm, a setting'?
We're in that bit of a hype cycle with AI across the board, particularly when it comes to marketing and adjacent industries like podcasting. Where you get a lot of pushback and the question of ethics and legality, I often feel like people are using that as a crutch or shield or as an excuse to push back on AI because of these other reasons. They're just like, 'I'm kind of fed up with it' or 'I see all this AI stuff and it makes me personally concerned or worried for my job, my role, my career, my business, my industry.'"
The reality is that some businesses and industries will be phased out because of AI. If you're in one of those—or think you might be—it's natural to be concerned. What often comes out as "Should we really be using AI for this?" is actually people saying, "I'm scared I won't have a job in 12 months."
"When someone questions if we should be using AI, they're often really saying 'I'm scared I won't have a job in 12 months.'" ~ Mike Allton
AI: Not Just a Tool, but a Technology Revolution
Mike: "AI isn't a tool. A lot of people call it a tool, and they might be referring to ChatGPT or a specific tool within AI, but AI as a thing is a technology like electricity.
There were guys that we paid to walk up and down the streets of our big cities at dusk every single day to light the gas lamps 200 years ago. Those guys lost their jobs when electricity and the electric light came in. Nobody today is saying, 'You know what? I don't like that electric light thing. We should probably get rid of it and go back to candles and gas lamps.' We all recognize as a society we've gone on to a better place."
This comparison to electricity helps put AI in perspective. It's not something we can simply choose not to adopt—it's reshaping how everything works, from business operations to healthcare and beyond.
Why AI Feels Different: The Speed of Change
Matt: "Is there something about AI? Is it the versatility or the scope? Because the reality is people's jobs have been eliminated by technology every quarter for the past, at least 140 years… but this seems different."
Mike: "It's different because in one respect it's not new. This is the fourth industrial revolution. So it's not the first time we've gone through this society-changing shift that's permeating every aspect of our society. But what's different is the rate of change.
The first industrial revolution took decades to accomplish. This fourth industrial revolution is happening in a matter of days, weeks, and months. There are things that we can do today that were unheard of just 12 months ago, and where we will be with this technology in 2025? People who are paying attention are mind-blown."
The acceleration is unprecedented. Major companies are pouring billions into developing frontier models—not just bigger and stronger but aimed at creating systems that can think for themselves. They're pushing toward Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) with incredible speed and often without sufficient guardrails.
The Gap Between Virtual and Physical AI in Business Implementation
Matt: "Like I was promised flying cars. My hands are still wet… I'll be very impressed by AI when I can walk into a bathroom and put my hands under a hand sensor, and it goes, 'Oh, hands.'"
Matt makes a fantastic point about the gap between virtual AI advancements and physical world implementation. While we've seen incredible progress in language models and digital applications, many basic physical world problems remain unsolved. This creates a disconnect in how people perceive AI's impact.
Mike: "That's also why things are changing so fast. Because they can have such a dramatic impact on virtual digital activities. When you talk about the real-world physical issues that we're trying to solve for—self-driving cars, hand washing dispensaries that actually work—there's that physical element of it that will continue to take time.
What's happening really rapidly today is anything that's digital, whether that's marketing, doing business online, research… I mean, you want to talk about advances, look at all the incredible advancements happening in genome research, gene splicing and medicine."
This distinction is crucial for businesses to understand. The digital transformation is happening at lightning speed, while physical world applications require more time to develop and implement.
Practical Applications: The Arkansas Lithium Discovery
One of the most fascinating real-world examples we discussed was how AI is changing resource discovery:
Mike: "They just discovered an incredibly huge supply of lithium under Arkansas—5 to 19 million tons of lithium is just there that they can drill down and get as a byproduct. This could potentially revolutionize manufacturing of lithium-ion batteries, which will then revolutionize how we're able to create self-driving cars. And it was discovered using machine learning—basically AI that helped our geological survey professionals realize there's a massive supply of lithium right under our doorstep."
This example illustrates how AI's impact extends far beyond the obvious applications in marketing or content creation. It's transforming fundamental industries and solving critical supply chain issues.
How AI Transforms Business and Marketing
During our conversation, I shared how AI has completely transformed my content creation process, particularly for podcasting:
Mike: "I used to spend two hours preparing for every single interview. I would research the guest… I'd come up with a framework for the show and questions for the guest… Now instead of a two-hour process, it's 20 minutes. And I went from being able to do one podcast for the company to four podcasts, where we're targeting different verticals."
This dramatic improvement in productivity doesn't mean eliminating jobs—it means being able to do more of what matters. For me, that's creating more valuable content and having more meaningful conversations with guests.
Mike: "AI has enabled me to scale in a way that as just an individual contributor I would not have been able to do otherwise."
The Future of Podcasting in Marketing Strategy
Matt was curious about how podcasting fits into a broader marketing strategy, especially in a world dominated by short-form content:
Mike: "I think this should be at the forefront… Every business, whether you're a small business, mid-market or enterprise, should be looking at a video-first strategy when it comes to marketing. And there's no easier way to create video than to simply interview really interesting people."
The real power comes in repurposing that content:
Mike: "When you do that, not only are you creating the video podcast on YouTube, Spotify, Apple, and everybody else, you have a 30-minute show with 7,500 words of text in a transcript. That is a pillar piece of content for your blog, and you can pull out snippets. Now thanks to my video podcast, I'm active on TikTok and Instagram reels where I wasn't a year ago."
For Business Leaders: Beyond the Hype
For business leaders reading this, the key takeaway is to look beyond both the hype and the fear. AI is neither a magic solution to all your problems nor the apocalyptic job-killer some make it out to be. It's a powerful technology that's evolving rapidly, with applications that range from the mundane to the revolutionary.
The most successful businesses will be those that:
- Identify specific business problems AI can solve rather than implementing AI for its own sake
- Start small and iterate rather than attempting massive transformation overnight
- Focus on augmenting human capabilities rather than replacing workers
- Invest in AI literacy across their organizations
- Stay informed about emerging capabilities without getting distracted by every new development
