Unlock Your Marketing Superpowers: How I Use AI to Do It All in Just 4 Hours a Week

Imagine this: you're a solopreneur, juggling clients, product development, and the never-ending demands of marketing. Now, what if you could not only keep all those balls in the air but also run a dynamic content machine—complete with a blog, a long-form newsletter, and multiple podcasts—all in just four hours a week? Sound like a far-fetched dream? For me, it's a weekly reality, and a smart approach to Artificial Intelligence is my not-so-secret weapon.

I recently shared my strategies on the "Be a Marketer" podcast, hosted by Dave Charest, the Director of Small Business Success at Constant Contact. The Be a Marketer podcast is dedicated to helping small business owners and marketers make sense of online marketing through real stories and practical, actionable advice. In the episode, "Smart Ways to Use AI as a Solopreneur with Mike Allton," Dave (LinkedIn profile) explored how I masterfully balance my role as Chief Storyteller at Agorapulse with my own thriving ventures, including The AI Hat.

Let's break down the gold nuggets from our conversation.

The Solopreneur's Time Crunch: A Familiar Story

I kicked things off by grounding the conversation in a reality many SMB owners and marketers know all too well: limited resources. The first thing I do is I have to recognize that I'm a solopreneur," I stated on the show. "I don't have staff, I don't have freelancers, I don't have VAs. It's just me". This constraint isn't a roadblock but a catalyst for innovation. I emphasized the need to develop "strategies, tactics, and processes where that's the top of mind".

And the time commitment for my personal brand, The Social Media Hat? "I spend two hours on a Saturday morning editing, publishing, and promoting the podcast. Spend two hours on a Saturday afternoon writing the weekly newsletter," I revealed. "So other than the actual interviews that I might do on a weekly basis, that's the sum total of my marketing. Four hours".

Strategic Pillars: The Power Duo of Podcasting & Newsletters

How do I achieve so much in so little time? By focusing on high-impact channels:

  • The Critical Newsletter: I see my newsletter, powered by Constant Contact, as central to my marketing. The newsletter is critical, I think, to the entire marketing process there because it's allowing me to connect individually with over 45,000 marketers," I explained. This isn't just any newsletter; it's a 2000+ word deep dive that later becomes a blog post, showcasing smart content repurposing.
  • The Trust-Building Podcast: Podcasting offers a unique way to connect. "No matter how much time I put into the newsletter, it is still just written content and I'm only hitting the people and I'm only hitting the kinds of learners that will resonate with written content," I pointed out. Video and audio allow for a deeper connection. I even humorously noted the subconscious impact of visual cues: "Our reptilian brains are telling you, Mike Alton's trustworthy. 'cause I could see his hands". This aligns with the Understand and Nurture aspects of The AI Hat's H.U.M.A.N. Framework, fostering genuine connection.

AI: The Efficiency Engine & Creative Partner

This is where AI truly transforms my workflow:

  • Podcast Prep on Steroids: Guest research and interview preparation, once a two-hour task, is now a swift 20-minute collaborative session with AI. I figured out how to use AI to help me research the guests, and I taught the AI, here's the format and the flow and the style and the tone that I want to have...and it's able to help me craft...introduction, a custom bio...questions, the takeaways, all of that. I use tools like Gemini, Claude, and Magai for these tasks.
  • Content Ideation & Repurposing Genius: For my newsletter, I use AI (like Gemini) to brainstorm relevant topic ideas for my audience. Beyond ideation, AI helps me mine existing content for new insights. "You can feed AI all the contents you've already created and ask the AI to identify trends... I'm gonna use that to build an entirely new newsletter that's talking about that topic and referencing my podcast episodes". I also mentioned Google's NotebookLM for summarizing research and even creating AI-generated podcast episodes from documents. For transcription and video work, Descript is a go-to tool.

The "Ask AI" Method: Your Persona Development Ally

One of the most powerful AI strategies I shared is how to develop customer personas. Instead of just feeding AI information, I advise, "Say to the AI, ask me questions to help me develop a persona". This turns AI into an active collaborator. "If you're treating AI like a really important strategist or consultant, that happens to be free...the output that you get at the end will be so much better". This approach is foundational to creating truly personalized AI assistants, much like the philosophy behind The AI Hat's AI Work Buddy.

Mastering Email Marketing with Smart Automation

I also touched on my use of Constant Contact to manage and segment my impressive email list:

  • The Welcome Email Imperative: "That initial email is the most important email you'll ever send because that's the only one you'll get virtually a hundred percent open rate," I stressed.
  • Intelligent Segmentation: I don't just collect emails; I learn about my subscribers. "Every single email that I send out, every link that's in that email, I also segment those... when you determine the link, you can choose to add them to a segment list". This allows for targeted follow-up based on demonstrated interest.
  • Boosting Opens with Automation: A favorite feature? The automatic resend to non-openers. "I can automatically set it when I schedule a Sunday send to automatically resend on Tuesday morning to anybody who didn't open the Sunday morning newsletter". This simple automation adds another 5% to my open rates.

The Essential AI Mindset Shift

Beyond specific tools and tactics, I underscored the importance of the right mindset for AI adoption:

  • It's a Revolution, Not a Fad: "AI is not a tool. It's not an app... It's a technology. It's an underpinning to everything that we're doing today. It's like electricity or the internet," I asserted. We are literally in the midst of the fourth industrial revolution".
  • Adaptation is Key: Ignoring AI isn't an option for businesses aiming to stay competitive. The key is to "start learning and reading a little bit and start simply". Look for AI already embedded in the tools you currently use, like Constant Contact's AI content tools. This aligns with the Adapt and Nurture principles of the H.U.M.A.N. framework, encouraging continuous learning and practical implementation.
